Yes, I was as skeptical as you are right now. But take a listen and then tell me that you hate it. I have a little bit more respect for The Vines than I did an hour ago.
Well...I don't know what to say. My first reaction was, "crapalicious." Then as the song progressed, I caught myself thinking, this almost sounds heartwrenching. And then I realized, no, idiot, it's not heartwrenching, it's just whining. Accoustic guitars and whiny vocals do not a worthwhile cover make.
This was actually the first (and fourth last) song I learned how to play on guitar a few years ago. It brings back memories of finger stretching frustration.
