Garry - I saw that 1000 albums book in Barnes & Noble today - it's quite the tome! Obviously something you'd enjoy, though (despite the inclusion of Justin Timberlake's "Justified"!).
I'm only at 1996, so I haven't reached JuTi yet. That album is "justified" by the fact that the title is 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and thus the included albums may not always be the best, but influential or culturally significant (example: Supertramp has two entries; Abba has three).
I completely agree - I've also watched an episode or two of the O.C. for much of the same reasons. You can't completely ignore the culture you live in.
