CBC.ca on Oprah; Slate on Oprah
Yesterday James Frey appeared on Oprah's show to apologise for "lying": "Frey said Thursday that 'most of what [the site] wrote was pretty accurate,' and that the Smoking Gun writers who found the discrepancies did "a good job.'" Oprah is pissed and regrets any words that defended Frey: "I made a mistake and I left the impression that the truth does not matter and I am deeply sorry about that. That is not what I believe." So, the truth does matter. But why does Oprah feel that she had confront him publicly? Couldn't she have condemmed the book or the author in a press release? I've got two words in response: publicity stunt. Let's see how many copies of Million Little Pieces are sold now.

Great title, Garry. This stunt was surely worth a million little dollars. I'd guess that sales have only increased since the scandal came about (it was the first I'd ever heard of it). I saw it at Target the other day with a big discount sticker on it, if that means anything.
When I saw this on the news I didn't really know what to think. I took at look at the Smoking Gun and watched a bit of the news on it as well. The thing that got me was how this story was a huge CNN news piece! This guy wrote some stuff about his life that isn't true and Oprah believed him. I guess that makes it a very very important news story. It's not like there aren't more important world events that could have been focused on.
So Frey over embellished on his "memoir". But tell me who doesn't. As if every celebrity written auto-biography or "the true story of" novel is accurate and not spiced up somehow. Basically this guy just lied about things that were easily uncovered. And he did it on Oprah.
But wow is this ever gonna increase sales of his book! haha
